What are SeaHives?
SeaHive shelters are manufactured in the UK by SeaHives Ltd, using recycled fishing nets and other waste plastic.
- SeaHive shelters are constructed using two sizes of hexagonal tubes, that are designed specifically to provide much needed homes for marine species to settle on and colonise e.g. crabs, gobies, blennies, wrasse, cuttlefish and squid eggs
- We need SeaHives because the biodiversity is being affected and we're seeing a reduction to our native species. Coastal habit destruction occurs in many ways including climate change, overfishing and other factors including coastal developments and litter.

What are we doing?
The main aim of the SeaHive project is not only to provide much-needed homes for a beloved native marine species, but to also educate and motivate future change for our oceans.
- In 2022, we kick-started our project by installing 3 units under Weymouth Pleasure Pier to create habitat and breeding grounds.
- The SeaHives proved to be very successful, and in less than one year they were full of animals that were using the structures as breeding shelters.
- In 2023, we applied for additional funding from The SEA LIFE Trust and with this, we expanded the project to include two further locations.
- These were assembled with the help of two different groups of children from the Local Sea Cadets groups and installed in the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing academy pontoons, suspended under their pier.
- So far, they are following the natural process of being colonised by different organisms.
