Animals You’ll Discover in our Rockpool
Meet the Short Spined Sea Urchin
It may be small, but it’s tough as nails!
With its stubby spines, this Tiny Titan spends its days wedged into rocky crevices, scraping algae off surfaces to keep the ocean floor tidy. Its spines may look sharp, but they're just the right size to help it hold steady against the waves. Look closely on your next visit – this tiny cleaner is always hard at work!
Short Spined Sea Urchin (Heliocidaris erythrogramma)
Meet the Burnt Sausage Sea Cucumber
One of the ocean's funniest-looking creatures – the Burnt Sausage Sea Cucumber!
This squishy, slow-moving invertebrate loves hanging out on the ocean floor. But don’t be fooled by its name – this little guy plays an important role in keeping the ocean floor clean and healthy. By munching on tiny bits of food in the sand, it helps keep the ocean sparkling. So next time you’re at the aquarium, see if you can spot this little clean-up crew member!
Burnt Sausage Sea Cucumber (Holothuria edulis)
Meet the Stromb Snail
This ocean critter has a cool twisty shell and two little "eye stalks" that help it peek around for food.
Living on sandy ocean floors, the Stromb Snail helps keep things balanced by munching on algae, making it an ocean floor superstar. Look out for this spiral-shelled friend next time you visit – it's hard at work keeping the ocean healthy!
Stromb Snail (Strombus Sp)
Meet the Chocolate Chip Sea Star
The Chocolate Chip Sea Star is a real treat for the eyes!
Its name comes from the dark, "chocolatey" bumps on its back that look just like little chocolate chips – but don't take a bite! These bumps aren’t just decorative, they help this sea star ward off hungry predators. Found along sandy ocean floors, the Chocolate Chip Sea Star plays a vital role in the ecosystem by scavenging for bits of food and keeping its underwater home clean. Next time you're exploring, see if you can find this sweet (but not edible) sea star in action!
Chocolate Chip Sea Star (Protoreaster nodosus)
Meet the Blue-green Puller
A little spark of colour in the ocean!
This vibrant fish, often shimmering in shades of blue, green, or yellow, is a delight to watch as it moves through the water. Small but mighty, Pullers play an essential role in their environment, feeding on plankton and contributing to the balance of their underwater world. Look closely, and you’ll see this vibrant swimmer adding a touch of brilliance to our rockpool!
Blue-green Puller (Chromis viridis)
Meet the Blue Linckia Sea Star
A living piece of ocean art, known for its vibrant blue colour and five arms stretching out like a star!
Moving slowly across rocks and coral, it helps keep the rockpool healthy by feeding on tiny particles and algae. And if it loses an arm? No problem – it can regrow one! Keep an eye out for this beautiful blue sea star next time you visit and see if you can spot it in its rocky home!
Blue Linckia Sea Star (Linckia laevigata)
Meet the Banded Coral Shrimp
Bold red-and-white stripes and long, delicate antennae!
These hardworking shrimp have incredible "cleaning" skills, removing parasites and dead skin from their aquatic friends and consume the particles as a meal. Look closely in rocky crevices or underwater hideouts, and you might spot this busy little helper always ready to lend a cleaning claw!
Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus)
