Turtle Conservation

Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast: A Hub for Marine Conservation

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast has taken a proactive role in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of marine turtles to ensure that they are conserved and sustained for future generations.

The Importance of Marine Conservation and How SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is Making a Difference

Marine conservation plays a critical role in preserving our oceans and the incredible creatures that call them home. On the Sunshine Coast, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is at the forefront of these efforts, working tirelessly to rehabilitate injured turtles, educate visitors, and promote sustainable practices. Through our turtle hospital, partnerships with local initiatives, and eco-friendly programs, we are dedicated to making a real impact on our marine environment.

Here’s how we’re leading the charge and how you can be part of it.

Raising Awareness Through Education

One of the core pillars of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast’s mission is education. The aquarium offers a variety of interactive exhibits and educational programs designed to inform visitors about marine conservation issues. During school holidays, special programs and activities are available, including guided tours and conservation efforts focused on sea turtles, providing both informative and entertaining experiences for children.

Visitors can also learn about the challenges marine life faces due to human-related impacts, including eating rubbish, boat strikes, and entanglements. Education plays a key role in reducing these threats by raising awareness and encouraging responsible actions to protect marine wildlife. Our school program offers further learning opportunities for students interested in conservation.

Supporting Marine Research and Breeding Programs

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast actively participates in marine research and breeding programs designed to protect endangered species. Through collaborations with conservation organizations and research institutions, the aquarium contributes to scientific studies on marine life and supports efforts to reintroduce endangered species into their natural habitats.

These efforts include monitoring nests during the incubation period, protecting them from predators, and ensuring the success of hatchlings emerging from the nest. Volunteers relocate nests if necessary for hatchling survival, helping to increase their chances of making it safely to the ocean.

Turtle Conservation Partnerships

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast partners with various organizations that focus on marine protection and conservation. By supporting these partnerships, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast amplifies the collective effort to conserve marine environments and push for stronger protections.

These partnerships also aim to establish turtle rescue centers and programs dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of sea turtles. Since opening in 1989, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast has rescued many turtles from beaches throughout Queensland, ensuring they receive the care they need before being released back into the wild. We also support initiatives like the SEA LIFE Trust to further these conservation efforts.

Turtle Conservation Program

The Turtle Conservation Program is a cornerstone of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast’s commitment to marine conservation. This vital initiative is dedicated to the protection and preservation of sea turtles and their habitats, including those found along the Great Barrier Reef. The program focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured sea turtles back into the wild.

Each year, numerous sea turtles are brought to the turtle rehabilitation centre, where they receive the care they need to recover from injuries caused by boat strikes, entanglements, and ingestion of plastic waste. Visitors can see this firsthand through our Behind the Scenes Tour, where they can learn more about the work our dedicated team does to save marine turtles.

In addition to hands-on rescue efforts, the Turtle Conservation Program emphasizes education and awareness. Visitors to SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast can learn about the challenges facing sea turtles, including the impact of plastic pollution and the importance of protecting nesting marine turtles. Interactive exhibits and educational talks provide insights into the life cycle of sea turtles and the critical role they play in marine ecosystems.

By supporting the Turtle Conservation Program, you can help ensure that these magnificent creatures continue to thrive in our oceans. Whether through volunteering, donating, or spreading the word, every action counts in the fight to protect sea turtles and their habitats.

Plastic Pollution Awareness and Reduction for Sea Turtles

Plastic pollution is one of the most significant threats to marine life, with millions of tons of plastic entering the oceans each year. SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is committed to raising awareness about the dangers of plastic waste and encouraging sustainable practices.

The aquarium actively participates in global campaigns like the Plastic Free Ocean initiative and engages with visitors on the importance of reducing plastic consumption. Additionally, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast has implemented eco-friendly practices in its operations, including reducing single-use plastics and encouraging recycling. The aquarium’s efforts to eliminate plastic waste are not only vital for its conservation message but also set an example for visitors on how they can make a difference in their own lives.

As part of our sustainability efforts, guests can also watch our Seal Presentation, where one of our seals showcases how plastic waste can be recycled!

Recently, the number of stranded, sick, and injured sea turtles has risen dramatically due to flooding and plastic pollution. This surge places greater pressure on rehabilitation facilities, making it crucial to provide timely care for sick and injured turtles.

Supporting the Marine Environment Locally

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is committed to the protection of local marine environments. By supporting sustainable tourism and responsible fishing practices, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast encourages both locals and visitors to contribute to the preservation of the local ecosystems and beyond.

We also run regular beach clean-ups which we announce on our social media, which play a crucial role in removing harmful plastic waste from the coastline before it reaches the ocean. These events, often tied to turtle releases, allow the community to take part in meaningful conservation work.

Through education and advocacy, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast works to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the diverse marine ecosystems of the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

How You Can Get Involved

While SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is actively working to protect marine life, you can also play a part in marine conservation. Here are a few simple ways to make a difference:
