Newborn Shark Pup

  • Monday 29th April 2013

UnderWater World Celebrates the birth of the first shark pup in the new Ocean Walkthrough.

The Whitetip Reef Shark, affectionately known as “JJ”, was born last week and was quickly moved to its new home in the Ray Pool where he will live infancy to protect him from larger sharks in the Ocean walk through.  Once JJ gets bigger and starts to mature he will then be relocated back into the 2.5 million litre tank.

As their name suggests, Whitetip Reef Sharks can be identified by the white spots on their dorsal and tail fins. They are typically nocturnal and have slender bodies with a short but blunt nose.  JJ has the potential to reach over 2.1 metres in length.  Any visitors that would like to meet JJ can see him in the ray pool in the Touch and Tell Zone.
