Long-snout Seahorse

Langschnauzen-Seepferdchen

Did you know?

  • Like all seahorses, the Long-snout Seahorseis characterised by a unique reproductive behaviour in which the males take care of the brood. The female transfers her eggs into a brood pouch on the male's abdomen, where the eggs are fertilised and kept safe until the young hatch. The male finally ‘gives birth’ to the fully developed young.
  • This species is known for its impressive variety of colours. The colouring ranges from bright yellow to red to orange and can change depending on mood, environment or readiness to mate. This ability to change colour serves both as camouflage and for communication with conspecifics.
  • Due to habitat loss, pollution and illegal collection for the aquarium industry, the Long-snout Seahorse is endangered in many parts of its range. Seahorses are particularly sensitive to changes in their habitats and their populations are declining in many places, making conservation measures necessary.
