The Lined Seahorse is found in a wide range of habitats along the Atlantic coast from Canada to Argentina. This species is adapted to various environmental conditions, from warm tropical waters to cooler temperate zones, which emphasises its remarkable adaptability.
Like other seahorse species, this species has a prehensile, long tail that it uses to cling to seagrass, coral or other underwater structures. This ability is particularly important as seahorses are weak swimmers and rely on their tails to avoid being swept away by currents.
The Lined Seahorse can change its colour and pattern to better adapt to its environment or to communicate with conspecifics. These colour changes often depend on the seahorse's mood, state of health or readiness to reproduce and can range from a pale grey to bright orange or yellow.
