Did you know?

  • Common Noses are classic schooling fish found in the rivers of Europe - especially the Danube, Rhine and Isar.
  • The Common Nose owes its name to its mouth, which makes the tip of its head look like a blunt nose.
  • At spawning time, the Common Nose develop a red rash in the form of red spots on their heads. The females lay up to 100,000 eggs.
  • Common Noses have a sharp-edged lower lip, which they use to graze algae from stones in rivers and streams. This specialised lip structure functions like a small blade with which the fish can effectively scrape off the growth, i.e. the algae and microorganisms growing on solid surfaces. This adaptation enables the Common Nose to survive in waters with strong currents, where competition for food is particularly fierce.
