Did you know?
- The Bleak favours oxygen-rich, fast-flowing waters. However, its slender body shape and powerful swimming movements also allow it to move efficiently in other water currents.
- It has dotted lines on its side, reminiscent of a seam when sewing - hence the German name "Schneider" (‘tailor’).
- Bleaks live in large shoals and are active swimmers. They feed mainly on small invertebrates, insects and algae that they find in the current. Their shoaling behaviour serves as a protective mechanism against predators and enables them to search for food efficiently.
