The Bleak favours oxygen-rich, fast-flowing waters. However, its slender body shape and powerful swimming movements also allow it to move efficiently in other water currents.
It has dotted lines on its side, reminiscent of a seam when sewing - hence the German name "Schneider" (‘tailor’).
Bleaks live in large shoals and are active swimmers. They feed mainly on small invertebrates, insects and algae that they find in the current. Their shoaling behaviour serves as a protective mechanism against predators and enables them to search for food efficiently.
