- This shrimp species is known for its symbiotic relationship with fish. These shrimps provide cleaning services by removing parasites, dead skin and pieces of tissue from fish. The fish visit special ‘cleaning stations’ where they allow the shrimp to clean them, which helps them stay healthy.
- With their red and white stripe pattern and long, white antennae, these shrimps are easy to recognise and look very striking. Their antennae can be up to twice as long as their body, which helps them to alert fish to their cleaning services and explore their surroundings.
- These shrimp often live as monogamous pairs that fiercely defend their territory. The pair works together to drive away intruders and shows a high degree of co-operation. This bond can last a lifetime, which is relatively rare in the animal world.
