Sprout amnesty for giant green sea turtles Boris and Phoenix

SEA LIFE London Aquarium calls for festive season sprout amnesty

Greedy Boris, a rare Green Sea turtle at the SEA LIFE London Aquarium (named by the Mayor of London himself), received his favourite festive feast today, a tiered platter of sprouts served by a besuited under-waiter Garçon.

For many, sprouts are the most dreaded part of Christmas dinner and are often left behind - contributing to environmentally unfriendly Christmas food waste. So, aquarists at the South Bank attraction have declared a Sprout Amnesty, requesting that people who usually ditch theirs on the day recycle them in advance instead, by bringing them in for the turtles to enjoy.

 

“Both of our resident Green Sea turtles have a very healthy diet made up of lettuce, brocolli and cucumber, and sprouts are an extra special festive treat that they enjoy,” commented Jamie Oliver, SEA LIFE London Aquarium Curator. “Unlike Boris, we know that for most people sprouts are the worst part of Christmas dinner, so rather than waste them we urge people to bring them in and put them in our specially marked ‘Sprout Amnesty’ box - Boris and Phoenix will make sure they don’t go to waste!”

 

The festive feast marked the beginning of the Christmas season at the SEA LIFE London Aquarium, which starts today and finishes on 28th December. On the weekends, Christmas Eve and Boxing day, guests can meet the cuddly Penguin Father Fishmas character in his icy home with the resident colony of Gentoo penguins, plus listen to educational talks and penguin facts every day.
