About our penguins
Penguins are very playful! They love to slide down icy passages and take turns diving into the sea. Did you know that their black and white coloration is a kind of camouflage? It helps them to adapt to the light water surface when enemies from deep water want to attack them.
Penguins live almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere. They are flightless birds, but they can shoot through the water like a torpedo to catch fish. There are 18 species of penguins. But overfishing and global warming threaten their natural food sources: It is becoming increasingly difficult for them to find food.
Among all penguins, the Gentoo Penguin is the fastest swimmer. It reaches about 30 kilometers per hour!
It gets its name from its calls, which sound similar to the cries of donkeys. Gentoo penguins use them to warn themselves about egg thieves or communicate during the mating season.
