Help, I’ve found a seal!

Seal pups spend most of their time out of water as they’re not quite ready to go into our cold seas from birth. They need a little time to grow before they do. An adult on land is nothing to worry about either. Adult seals spend a lot of time on land to rest, digest and socialise all year round.

Of course, if the seal or seal pup is injured that does change things. First of all, stay calm. Keep away from the seal and call British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765546.

Here is a handy guide to safe seal practices.

Do Keep Your Dog on a Lead

If you’re walking your dog on the beach in the winter months, be aware that seal pups may be present. A dog’s bite can do a lot of damage to a seal pup. #

Do Keep Your Distance

A mum will only return to her pup if she thinks it is safe to do so. If lots of people are standing around, she will not return to the pup.

Do Not Touch

A mother may reject her pup if it smells of people.

Do Not Feed

This can make them ill or change their natural behaviours.

Do Not Put Any Seal Back In the Sea

All seals haul out onto land to rest, digest and socialise. Seal pups also spend most of their time out of water. Putting them into the water could be very dangerous for them.

Do Take a Good Look from a Distance

If the pup is alone, thin, injured or seems unwell (noisy breathing, coughing, running nose) it may need help.

Do Something

Telephone British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765 546 giving an accurate location.
