World Nature Conservation Day
- Friday 26th July 2024
Here at SEA LIFE, we’re celebrating World Nature Conservation Day…but what is it?
What is World Nature Conservation Day?
World Nature Conservation Day is an annual event held on July 28th. This is a special day dedicated to highlighting just how important it is for us to care for nature by saving plants and animals, caring for our oceans, and keeping nature such as flora, fauna, soil, water and air intact. World Nature Conservation Day emphasises how important it is that we protect the environment for future generations.
What is SEA LIFE doing to take care of nature and the environment?
You can find out about how SEA LIFE support World Nature Conservation Day by watching the below video, but we’re also caring for the environment through a number of key conservation projects:
We’re Ocean allies!
Each year, we organise the world’s largest 24 hour Beach Clean, it’s just one way we look after our seas and shorelines and champion the need for plastic-free oceans. Hundreds of volunteers take part, removing 1000s of kg from the world's beaches.
We care about Coral Use coral image
The AZA-Florida Reef Tract Rescue Project (AZA-FLTRP) is a coral rescue and conservation network focused on the rescue, housing and future propagation of Florida corals affected by stony coral tissue loss. Together, we're creating a bio-bank of healthy corals to preserve genetic diversity for years to come. By restoring coral reefs, we're helping to ensure future generations have a planet where oceans are full of diverse life, coastlines are protected and communities can thrive.
We’re safeguarding sharks
Together with ReShark, we’re working with a global network of aquariums and conservation organisations, and through the StAR (Stegostoma Tigrinum Augmentation and Recovery) breeding programme, we’re re-wilding zebra sharks back into marine protected areas of Indonesia.

What can you do to help?
Cut down on plastic use
Plastic is very popular because it is cheap, but it comes with a lot environmental implications. Try switching to products made of degradable and natural components instead and making simple changes such as using reusable shopping bags, refillable water bottles and coffee cups, and paper straws.
Check e-waste
All of us are guilty of buying new electronic items- such as phones and tablets- without thinking about where our old pones end up. We should all aim to reduce our e-waste and look for recycling options (there are lots available!) before buying new products.
Save water
One of the biggest effects of climate change has been the decreasing level of safe drinking water. Simple steps like turning off water taps when not in use, having shorter showers, and using less water when washing up or bathing, can save thousands of gallons of water each year.
