The Wonderful World Of Penguins: World Sight Day

  • Friday 18th October 2024
  • Penguins

SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s is home to gentoo and king penguins, offering a unique opportunity to observe their daily lives in an environment designed to mimic the icy conditions of the Antarctic. These penguins display natural behaviours like diving, foraging, and preening, reflecting their wild counterparts.

Penguins are highly social, relying on vocalisations and visual cues to communicate and bond with each other. Visitors can see them interacting, whether it’s during nesting season or swimming together. Each penguin has its own distinct personality, with some being more adventurous and others preferring the company of their partners.

The carefully controlled habitat at SEA LIFE ensures that the penguins can thrive, with cold temperatures, ice, and plenty of space to swim and play. Educational displays and talks provide additional insight into their behaviours and adaptations, making it an engaging experience for all ages.

Penguin Biology and Behavior of Flightless Birds

Penguins are fascinating flightless birds that have adapted remarkably well to their environments. Living in large colonies, some species form groups that number in the hundreds of thousands, creating a bustling community of activity. Despite their inability to fly, penguins are exceptional swimmers, with some species reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour in the water. Their wings have evolved into flippers, making them agile and efficient underwater hunters. Penguins spend significant portions of their lives at sea, foraging for food, which connects them to the ocean and exposes them to threats like overfishing, pollution, and climate change.

One of the most intriguing aspects of penguin biology is their feather structure. Penguins use their dense, waterproof feathers to trap a layer of air next to their skin, providing insulation against the frigid waters they inhabit. On land, their distinctive waddling gait allows them to move efficiently, despite their short legs and stout bodies.

Penguins are found throughout the southern hemisphere, from the icy expanses of Antarctica to the warmer waters of the Galápagos Islands, showcasing their remarkable adaptability to various climates. Many species undertake seasonal migrations, travelling vast distances in search of optimal breeding grounds or food sources. One of the most significant of these journeys is the annual northern migration of Adélie penguins, who travel hundreds of kilometres from the Antarctic ice to reach ice-free coastal areas where they gather to breed, build nests, and raise their chicks during the warmer months.

Penguins are also known for their strong social bonds. They are monogamous animals, with many species forming long-term pair bonds that can last for many years. Communication is key in their social structure, and penguins use a variety of calls and visual displays to interact with each other. From courtship rituals to warning signals, these vocalisations and behaviours are essential for maintaining their complex social networks.

Penguin Sight and Raise Awareness For Eye Health on World Sight Day

Penguins rely on their exceptional vision to navigate both land and sea. Their eyes are specially adapted to underwater life, allowing them to see clearly as they swim through icy waters. With a flatter cornea and stronger eye muscles, penguins can adjust their lens shape for optimal vision both in and out of the water. Their circular pupils constrict to protect against the sun’s glare on snow and ice, while their wider field of vision helps them spot predators and prey.

This World Sight Day, which was on the 10th of October the focus was on children and young people. Regular eye tests for children are essential to ensure early detection and correction of vision problems.

Ensuring healthy vision is crucial for both humans and animals, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) plays a pivotal role in coordinating World Sight Day initiatives, promoting eye health through various resources and campaigns. Uncorrected vision impairment can significantly impact children's education and social inclusion. Creating awareness about eye care is vital, as it ensures that the younger generation prioritises their eye health.

World Sight Day highlights the importance of vision care for people all over the world. We think animals deserve this day as well! For penguins, clear eyesight is crucial to their survival, helping them hunt, avoid predators, and interact with one another. The recent celebration of this day reminds us of the ongoing efforts to protect vision for all species. It also underscores the importance of child eye health and the need for accessible eye care services for children.

Happy Penguin

Penguins also have their own special day—World Penguin Day, celebrated on the 25th of April. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about penguin species, their habitats, and the conservation efforts needed to protect them. At SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s, visitors can learn more about these remarkable birds and the ways they have adapted to thrive in extreme environments.

In 2023 we had our penguins create artwork to raise money for their feathered friends in the wild with our conservation program penguins for penguins. You can still shop for these paintings and support conservation efforts.

Taking Action to Support Eye Health

Taking action to support eye health is crucial for maintaining healthy vision. Here are some ways to get involved:

  • Pledge an eye test on behalf of a young person as part of the #LoveYourEyes campaign.
  • Support organisations working to prevent blindness and promote eye health, such as the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).
  • Raise awareness about the importance of eye care and vision health on social media using the hashtag #LoveYourEyes.
  • Participate in World Sight Day activities and events to promote eye health and prevent blindness.
  • Donate to organisations working to provide eye care services to those in need.

By taking action to support eye health, we can make a difference in the lives of millions of people worldwide and ensure that everyone has access to quality eye care services.

Melody's Journey – A Life-changing Surgery

Melody, a 14-year-old gentoo penguin at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s, recently made history as the second penguin to undergo cataract surgery at Eye Institute, Auckland. The procedure was carried out by renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Peter Hadden, who had previously performed a similar surgery on Cardi, another gentoo penguin at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s.

Thanks to this life-changing surgery, Melody is back to living her best life, thriving in her environment and bonding with her fellow penguins. Her story reflects the ongoing commitment to animal care and the innovative treatments that help improve the lives of creatures at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s.
