Penguins for Penguins
Sustainable Artwork for Penguins by Penguins
Penguins for Penguins is run by our amazing Bird Department at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's, Auckland. We have created a sustainable brand where the public can enjoy unique art created by the penguins in our care and in return support local penguin wildlife.
The Painting Process
The process to make this unique piece of art is a sustainable one, the canvases used are recycled cardboard from fish boxes. Using Penguin friendly paints, the penguins choose their favourite colours before voluntarily walking (and sometimes in groups) across the canvas of their choice.
The foot prints left by the penguins are the main feature of the art work though often their tail swishes create unique patterns that make the overall art piece unique from the rest.
After each piece is left to dry, each painting is framed and sold on the Penguins for Penguins website or the SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's gift shop with all proceeds going to penguin focused charities in New Zealand.
Why we advocate for Penguin Conservation
Aotearoa / NZ is the penguin capital of the world. In the wild, penguins face significant threats such as habitat loss, bycatch and predation from introduced pests.
Advocating for wild penguins is very important to us and we love to share our knowledge of penguins, sustainability and conservation to help care and preserve our local wildlife.
We do this through education by chatting to visitors at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's and the daily penguin talks. We also volunteer and assist in Penguin rehabilitation with Dunedin Wildlife Hospital as well as donate funds generated by the artwork created by the penguins in our care.
